Joanna Shields, Baroness Shields OBE, serves as Group Chief Executive Officer at BenevolentAI Limited since May 2018. From 2012-2018, Ms. Shields served in the UK Government in several roles including Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State and Minister for Internet Safety & Security, Prime Minister's Special Representative on Internet Harms and Crimes, Business Ambassador for Digital Industries, Digital Economy Advisor to the Prime Minister and Chair and CEO of Tech City UK.
Ms. Shields started her career in 1987 in Silicon Valley and for over 25 years, she built, managed and scaled international technology businesses, maximised shareholder value and lead startup companies to successful exits. She served as Vice President and Managing Director of Facebook EMEA; as President and Chief Executive Officer of Bebo, and President of the Social and Communications Division of Aol LLC. She served as Managing Director of Syndication and Partnerships for Google Europe, Russia, Middle East and Africa, Vice President, International at RealNetworks, Chief Executive Officer of Veon, Vice President and Managing Director of EMEA for Decru, Vice President of Production Systems at Electronics for Imaging and Marketing Manager for National Digital Corporation. Ms. Shields began her career as a Research Analyst for Deloitte Haskins & Sells in Washington, DC.
Ms Shields is the founder of WePROTECT.org, a multi-stakeholder global alliance to protect children from online abuse and exploitation with over 80 country members. She is also a founding member of the Child Dignity Alliance, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a member of the Transatlantic Commission on Election Integrity. She previously served as a non-executive director of the London Stock Exchange Group, TalkTalk Telecom Group and MindCandy; and as a Trustee of Save the Children, UK and The American School in London. In 2011, she was #1 on the Wired 100 and in 2013 was ranked as one of the top 100 most powerful women in the UK. Ms. Shields holds a B.Sc. from The Pennsylvania State University, an MBA and a Doctorate Honoris Causa in Public Service from The George Washington University.
